Often, upper level
disturbances ride along the high altitude
winds far above the earth's surface. They
are not associated with any surface storms
and sometimes they are not even mentioned
in weather forecasts. These disturbances
very often spawn the unexpected shower
that ruins a family picnic. As you can see
in the graphic above, the disturbance's
vertical circulation causes rising
vertical motion ahead of the disturbance.
This can lead to clouds and precipitation.
Skies rapidly clear behind the disturbance
because of the sinking air, which inhibits
clouds and precipitation. Usually, upper
level disturbances do not produce
widespread or long lasting precipitation.
They can, however, trigger thunderstorms
and severe weather during spring and
summer. |
